Student Competitions

CHI will sponsor two student competitions for 2007:

  • Student Design Competition Overview
  • Student Research Competition Overview
Along with the valuable experience of working on problems and competing in a world-class environment, awards are given to the winners of the two competitions.

Student Design Competition Overview

This is the fourth year of the CHI Student Design Competition. The competition has grown each year with increased international representation. In 2006 there were 50 projects from 24 institutions in 8 countries. Feedback indicates that students who participate in the competition often pursue HCI related studies and careers. Student design competitions are typically submitted by teams, and all center around a pre-announced problem.

Please visit the Student Design Competition page for more detailed information about the CHI 2007 design problem, the submission process, and deliverables.

Student Research Competition Overview

This competition highlights research, rather than applied design. Student-led and directed research projectis are eligible. While there is no specific problem for the research competition, competitors are encouraged to consider the CHI 2007 theme, "Reach Beyond".

Please visit the Student Research Competition page for more detailed information about the CHI 2007 student research competition.

Attending CHI

Unfortunately, CHI is unable to sponsor travel and registration for competitors. Those interested in competing in either competition are encouraged to apply for positions as Student Volunteers to help potentially defray some of the costs. Please note that student volunteer positions are highly in demand, and that applications close early (September, 2006), so apply early.

Important Dates

  • September 1: Starting date for student volunteer applications
  • January 15, 2007: Deadline for submission of short papers and proof of student status
